Toby Alderweired speaks of his trust in this player

Tottenham Hotspur have been extremely unfortunate with injuries this season, as most of their first team has been out at some point or another.

It seems as if every time a player returns from injury, another is struck down.

One man who has been out repeatedly this season is Jan Vertonghen, who is currently enduring his second spell out in the last month.

What this has meant is that long term Belgian centre back partner Toby Alderweireld has played alongside a variety of other defenders so far this season.

So far, Toby has partnered Jan, Davinson Sanchez, Juan Foyth, and most recently, Ben Davies.

With the number of injuries to defensive stars, Ben Davies, primarily a left back, has been filling in for his centre back team mates.

So far, he has managed to see out two clean sheets alongside Alderweireld, and the Belgian has raved about his faith in the Welsh international.

Toby said (Tottenham website): “You always know he can play there and I think he’s been performing very well in the last two games. For Wales, he plays in a three-man central defence on the left. He’s a very smart player and he knows what to do.

“You can trust him – he’s very reliable. When you’re next to him, you know what he’s going to do. When I step in, I know he’s going to be there at my back and the same the other way around, so there’s a good connection there. We know how to play and we talk a lot.

“The team worked hard for the clean sheet, not only the defenders. We dug in – we knew we had to get a good result to get to the semi-finals.

“It’s obviously a difficult place to come, I think sometimes you need to have a little bit of luck as well, but we played very well.”
