Toby Alderweireld may be dropped again tonight for this reason

Tottenham Hotspur unfortunately fell victim to their North London rivals in the derby at the weekend, despite being 2-1 up at half time.

Spurs looked as if they simply ran out of puff in the second half, when some fresh Arsenal legs ran rampant to clinch the tie.

A few eyebrows were raised at the fact Pochettino decided to leave Tottenham’s star centre back Toby Alderweireld on the bench for the pivotal match.

This may have had something to do with Spurs having played two big games already that same week, against Chelsea and Inter Milan.

However, it seemed strange to rest Toby when Vertonghen had only just returned from injury, and the inexperience Juan Foyth had also been playing a lot of games.

Pochettino has no hinted that it is not certain that Alderweireld will even return tonight against Southampton, as there are other options at his disposal.

Is Poch preparing for a life without Toby?

The Evening Standard report he said: “We’ll see. There are different options, [Eric] Dier can play there too. We come from a competitive week and we are going to face another competitive week: Southampton, Leicester on Saturday and a must-win game against Barcelona.

“We’re going to play a lot of games before January. It’s so important to keep all involved and in the best condition to compete. Some players maybe we cannot rotate for different circumstances.”
