Toby Alderweireld reveals why Spurs and Liverpool had the edge over their Champions League opponents

Tottenham Hotspur have been labelled with the terms ‘bottle’ and ‘bottle jobs’ in recent years, but they have made a huge statement through the Champions League this season.

As if securing second place in their group after taking just a point from the first three games, they continued their underdog spirit all the way through the tournament.

Spurs battered the then German League leaders Borussia Dortmund 4-0 on aggregate, before scoring three away goals at Man City to make it through to the semis.

Not wanting to have the City game as their last hoorah, Spurs then came from 3-0 down on aggregate at half-time in the second leg to progress on the away goals rule.

At no point in this year’s competition have Tottenham known when to quit or when to lie down and give up.

Toby Alderweireld believes Spurs were physically stronger than Ajax, which allowed them to fight until the last minute. He also argued that Liverpool and Spurs were both mentally strong in their semi-finals.

Toby said (Daily Star): “Mentally, physically we have been strong. We were physically stronger than Ajax. They have enormous quality. They know how to play.

“The desire and the physicality, even the way we play football. It was not only, fight, fight, fight. We played good football as well, especially in the second half.

“And, of course, mentally, Liverpool and us… You can’t say we’re mentally weak!”

Spurs Web Opinion:

With the never-say-die mentality shown by Spurs and Liverpool this week, it really doesn’t matter who scores first in the final. Each side is going to fight until the final minute to secure that trophy, no matter the scoreline.
