Tottenham Hotspur announced today that Toby Alderweireld has signed a new contract with the club that will run until the end of the 2022/23 season.
This will be music to many fans’ ears as the Belgian centre-back was previously thought to be leaving at the end of the season when his previous contract ran out.
Not only would Spurs have lost one of the best central defenders in the country, but he would also have left on a free transfer, with Tottenham getting no money for him.
Who knows if it was an increased salary, the Mourinho effect, or an inevitable new contract, but Alderweireld looks to be in North London for the long-term.
Toby has started every single game so far for Jose Mourinho and has been largely an everpresent figure in the Spurs defence since joining the club back in 2015.
Alderweireld took to Twitter to thank his teammates, the club staff, supporters, and his family.
Extremely happy and honored to sign a new deal at @SpursOfficial . I would like to thank everyone at the club, the staff, my team mates, all the wonderful supporters and of course my family for the support on and off the pitch.
I’m really excited for the future. ?? #COYS pic.twitter.com/8eiEnBwJCB
