Toby Alderweireld speaks about his future at Spurs and what he hopes will happen

Toby Alderweireld’s future at Tottenham Hotspur has been the subject of many a newspaper column over the past few months.

When Spurs took up the option a twelve month contract extension in January, it triggered a £25million transfer release clause which runs until the last two weeks of the current window (Sky Sports).

Alderweireld was asked about his future while on international duty with Belgium and insists that he is preparing to be at Tottenham next season and stated that he hopes that the club are working on bringing in some fresh faces to the squad after going nearly eighteen months without making a signing.

The Sun recently reported that Manchester United were interested in triggering the £25million release clause in a bid to bolster their defence by bringing the 30-year-old to Old Trafford.

After Belgium’s win against Kazakhstan, the defender told Nieuwsblad: “I’m focusing on a new season at Spurs.

“I hope the club is working on reinforcements.”

Opinion

Alderweireld is certainly saying the right things in the media about his future and his comment about strengthening the squad shows that he wants to see improvements made at the club ahead of the new campaign.

Whether Spurs can match his ambitions remains to be seen. It would be madness if the club allowed him to leave.
