Toby Alderweireld’s father drops hint on defender’s next move

Toby Alderweireld’s father has admitted that the Tottenham Hotspur defender could move to a club closer to his native Belgium when his contract expires.

The central defender’s future in North London was the subject of intense press speculation last year until he signed a new contract until 2023 in December, otherwise, he would have been free to begin negotiations with clubs outside England in January of this year if he did not put pen to paper and Tottenham faced losing him for nothing in the transfer window just gone.

Having bought a house in Ekeren in the northern part of Antwerp, the property will be ready in the same year in which the Belgian international will be out of contract.

While his father does not rule out the prospect of remaining at Spurs, Alderweireld will be 34 at the time while also mentioning Ajax and Antwerp as potential future destinations for the twilight of his career.

He told Gazet van Antwerpen: ‘The house will be ready in the course of 2023, in line with his contract with Tottenham. We’ll see where Toby will play football, at Tottenham, Ajax, an Antwerp club or elsewhere. But the chance that he will play closer to home at the age of 34 is real.’
