‘Too expensive’ – Manager admits he wanted to sign Micky Van de Ven before Spurs

Former Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder has revealed that the Eredivisie giants wanted to sign Micky van de Ven back in 2022 but the centre-back proved too expensive for the club at the time.

Van de Ven has had an extremely rapid rise over the last couple of years, with the centre-back playing for Volendam in the Dutch second tier until 2022.

It was his performances for Volendam that brought him to the attention of Wolfsburg’s scouts, with the centre-back going on to establish a big reputation during his short time in the Bundesliga.

That convinced Tottenham to part ways with £43m to bring the 22-year-old to the club last summer and that has proven to be money well spent, with the Netherlands international having an outstanding debut season in the Premier League.

Van de Ven has formed a formidable partnership at the back with Cristian Romero, with the Argentine even describing his centre-back partner as one of the best in the Premier League in his position (The Sun).

Ajax looked at Micky van de Ven back in 2022

It turns out that Ajax seriously considered a move for the Tottenham man back in 2022 before they ended up signing Calvin Bassey and Ahmetcan Kaplan during that window.

The club’s former boss Schreuder told Voetbal International (as relayed by Voetbal Zone) “Other options were not available to us at the time. For example, we were interested in Micky van de Ven, but he turned out to be too expensive.”

Van de Ven has gone on record saying he supported Ajax. One would imagine that the centre-back would have thus been quite keen on the switch to Johan Cruyff Arena.

However, looking at how his career has unfolded since his switch to Germany, the 22-year-old would now be glad that the move to Ajax fell through.
