‘Too high’ – Journalist says Spurs will not meet Premier League star’s price tag

The Daily Mail’s Josh Hughes has said that while Tottenham do admire Ivan Toney, the North London club are expected to be priced out of a move for the Brentford star in January.

If Ange Postecoglou was perhaps on the fence about whether Spurs need to sign a centre-forward in January, the team’s struggles in front of goal over the last couple of weeks could well have swayed his opinion on the matter.

The one number nine whose name has been mooted as a target for Tottenham more often than any other striker over recent months is Toney, with the speculation linking the 27-year-old with a move to N17 showing no signs of dissipating.

In fact, The Sun claimed recently that the Chelsea hierarchy are convinced they will face competition from the Lilywhites for the 27-year-old in January.

The report claimed that even though Tottenham have played down the idea of signing the England international, the Blues expect their London rivals to vie for the player’s signature.

Over the past few weeks, it has been suggested that Arsenal (Kick via CaughtOffside) and Manchester United (Daily Mail) could also vie for the striker’s signature.

Ivan Toney too expensive for Spurs in January

Hughes has now confirmed that the Brentford striker is very much on Tottenham’s radar.

However, he remarked that he cannot see Spurs paying the kind of fee in January that the Bees would demand for their star man.

The journalist said on Chris Cowlin’s YouTube channel: “Spurs do like Ivan Toney, I don’t think that’s a secret, a lot of clubs like Ivan Toney.

“Again though, I can’t see Ivan Toney moving to Spurs this window. The asking price is just too high, Brentford are going to ask for as much money as they want because they know how valuable he is.”

Even if Tottenham were willing to pay the £80m or so that Brentford are likely to demand for Toney, the striker may not look too favourably on the idea of joining Spurs, particularly if the likes of Arsenal also vie for his signature next month.
