‘Too soft in duels’ – Tottenham’s Destiny Udogie receives criticism from the press

Destiny Udogie has come under criticism for his lacklustre display in Udinese’s 1-1 draw against Verona on Tuesday.

Udogie has built on his impressive breakthrough season in 2021-22 and has been one of the Udinese’s most consistent performers this campaign after rejoining the club on loan in the summer following his switch to Spurs.

The 20-year-old has four goal contributions to his name far in the Serie A this season and looks set to compete for the left wing-back spot at Tottenham next season if he continues in the same vein.

Udinese boss Andrea Sottil even described the Italy Under-21 international as an ‘extraordinary’ player after his side’s loss to Juventus a couple of weeks ago (Football.London).

However, TuttoMercatoWeb have not been complimentary of the on-loan Spurs star’s latest showing, giving him a rating of just 5.5/10 for his display against Verona.

The publication wrote about Udogie’s performance on Tuesday: “Something more is always expected from him. It can’t be said that he hurts, but sometimes he is too soft in duels and lacks lucidity in the last thirty meters.”

Spurs Web Opinion

At Udogie’s age, it is only natural that there is a bit of inconsistency, which should improve as he gets more experience under his belt.

There is no doubt in my mind that the 20-year-old would be an upgrade on Ryan Sessegnon but Tottenham might also feel that he could benefit from spending next season on loan as well before returning to the club as a finished product in 2024.
