‘Took the game seriously’ – Doherty reacts to scoring Spurs brace vs Motherwell

Matt Doherty has admitted following his brace against Motherwell that he enjoyed being out on the field again after a couple of weeks off.

The members of the Tottenham squad who are not part of the World Cup are currently going through a mini-preseason at Hotspur Way as they look to get their sharpness and match fitness back ahead of the resumption of the Premier League campaign on Boxing Day.

The players took on Scottish side Motherwell in a friendly at the training ground on Thursday, with Spurs emerging comfortable 4-0 winners.

Doherty, who started as a left wing-back, scored one in each half, with the Irishman cutting onto his right foot and squeezing the ball past the goalkeeper in the 28th minute before turning home a corner kick in the 71st minute to put some gloss on the scoreline.

The 30-year-old admitted that he enjoyed the outing, given the dominance that Spurs enjoyed from start to finish.

Speaking after the 4-0 win, Doherty told Spurs Play: “It was nice to get the shirt back on and get back out there. We played well, took the game seriously, pressed how we wanted to press, didn’t give them any real chance to start the game well, and we were on top from the start, so it was quite enjoyable – and I managed to be in the right place twice!”

Conte was quite honest about the fact that he did not feel Doherty was at his sharpest at the start of the season, on the back of the injury he sustained back in April.

The 30-year-old showed signs that he had regained match sharpness just before the mid-season break and hopefully, the couple of weeks’ rest and the mini-preseason should help him reach peak physical condition ahead of the Premier League’s resumption.
