Five players Spurs should consider to replace Mousa Dembele

According to reports Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele is close to finalising a move to the Chinese Super League with Guangzhou R&F and Beijing Guoan both interested in signing the Belgian.

With Spurs already being short in numbers in the central midfield area, Tottenham have been linked with quite a few names in the past few weeks.

Here are the five best options for Spurs to go for in their quest to replace the 31-year-old midfielder.

Tanguy Ndombele

There were a lot of rumours linking Ndombele to Spurs all of last summer and the links have continued in the January transfer window. Ndombele has had a great season so far for Lyon, putting in stellar performance both in Ligue 1 as well as the Champions League. He was particularly impressive during Lyon’s away win in the group stages of the Champions League.

He showed with his performance at the Etihad that he is more than capable of competing at a high level. Of all the players linked with Spurs, the Frenchman is probably the most like for like replacement for Dembele.

Franck Kessie

The Ivorian midfielder has been another one who has been strongly linked with Spurs in recent weeks. The 22-year-old who is currently on loan at AC Milan is said to be keen on playing Champions League football and Atlanta are open to letting him go for an offer for €40million (£35.6m).

Kessie will certainly be a welcome addition as not only will he add strength and physicality to the Spurs team but is also capable of creating with the ball at his feet.

Abdoulaye Doucouré

Among the players linked Doucoure will probably be the safest bet as he is proven in the Premier League. He would thus be capable of slotting into the team straight away which will be an asset given Spurs’ injury crisis.

Further, the Frenchman has expressed his desire to leave Watford for a more ambitious club. However, the 26-year-old would also cost a fair bit of money as he is attracting interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs including PSG.

Frenkie de Jong

The 21-year-old Dutch international is one of the most highly rated young midfielders in the world. Both PSG and Barca are said to be interested in him but his willingness to play first-team football might give Spurs an advantage considering the club boast of a good success rate with respect to players bought in from Ajax.

There is no doubt that De Jong is going to be a superstar in the future and if we can convince him that Pochettino is the guy to help him improve his game, then we might just have a shot at getting him.

Wilmar Barrios

The tough-tackling Columbian would certainly prove a welcome addition to the Tottenham midfield Given Wanyama’s trouble with injuries. Spurs and Everton have both been linked with the 25-year-old recently. He is, however, one of the riskier options as he has no experience of playing in Europe and would likely need a fair bit of time to settle in.

While it is not clear who Spurs’ have set as their main targets, one thing is for sure – Given the number of injuries Tottenham currently have, we can’t afford to let Dembele go without signing a replacement.
