Tony Cascarino has urged Tottenham Hotspur to try and sign Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte (TalkSport 24/07/21 from 6 AM onwards).

This comes after Fabrizio Romano reported that he could go to Tottenham as a part of a mega swap-deal for Harry Kane which could also potentially include Gabriel Jesus or Raheem Sterling

The 27-year-old centre-half played 27 games in all competitions during Manchester City’s title-winning campaign last year.

Laporte has shone for Man City since signing from Athletic Bilbao for a club-record fee of £57m at the time.

However, the centre-back never earned a cap for France despite playing various games for the youth team.

FIFA approved the defender’s switch of nationality from France to Spain and he played every single minute of Spain’s Euro 2020’s campaign which saw them make the semi-finals, where they lost to eventual winners Italy on penalties.

Ex-Republic of Ireland striker Cascarino spoke highly of Laporte and suggested he is a player that Spurs need.

He said: “If I am Tottenham then I am trying to get Laporte. Whether he would go to Tottenham because you never know where a player wants to go to.

“But if they lose Harry Kane. They need that type of centre-half. Laporte is a top centre-half, for me.

“If they can get him in, and he would want to go, then it would be a great signing for them. They need somebody like that.”

Laporte ticks every box. He has proved at his time under Pep Guardiola at Man City that he is genuinely one of the worlds best centre-backs.

Unfortunately, the only stumbling block – and a big one at that – is why on earth one of the most sought after defenders would come to a team in the Europa Conference League unless City really want him gone with Stones and Dias now.
