Top five individual Tottenham player performances

Football is a team game, but over the years there have been some mesmerising stand out individual performances in a Spurs shirt.

We want to take a look at the top five personal performances in recent years:

Gareth Bale vs Inter Milan

Take your pick of the leg, because he did it in both. Gareth Bale’s games home and away to Inter Milan in the Champions League were the real coming of age performances for the Welshman.

4-0 down inside the first half an hour, at the San Siro, against the mighty Inter Milan, it all looked like Spurs may have bitten off more than they could handle on the European stage.

However, one player who refused to sit down and accept the thrashing was Gareth Bale, who very nearly pulled off the greatest single-handed come back of all time, scoring a hattrick to bring the score back to 4-3.

The winger took things one step further in the home leg, as he tore arguably the best right back in the world at the time, Maicon, to shreds for 90 minutes.

Bale set up two of the Spurs goals in that famous 3-1 win, and bested his man Maicon dozens of times throughout the match.

Jermain Defoe vs Wigan

This performance simple has to make the list, how can it not?

In 2009, Defoe stuck five superb goals past Wigan Athletic in a sensational 9-1 win at the Lane.

The achievement equalled a Premier League record of the most goals by a single player in one game.

Defoe carved the Wigan defence apart for the entire 90 minutes, smashing home every chance that came his way.

Rarely have the Tottenham faithful seen a more clinical performance.

Harry Kane vs Arsenal

It’s 2015, Tottenham are finally challenging Arsenal as the best team in North London, and the rivals meet at White Hart Lane for their latest derby.

Up steps Harry Kane.

Mesut Ozil scored for the Gunners early on, making it look like the same old story for Tottenham against their bitter rivals.

But, 56 minutes into the game, after a Lamela corner fizzes through a packed box, who should be there at the far post to tap the ball home but Spurs’ number 18.

Half an hour later, with only 4 minutes left on the clock, Bentaleb sends in a searching ball from deep. Harry Kane leaps to meet the ball, surely he’s unable to score from there…?

Kane hangs in the air and guides the ball past a diving Arsenal keeper with aplomb, sending White Hart Lane into chaos as Tottenham come from behind to beat Arsenal.

Dele Alli vs Real Madrid

The finest performance in a Tottenham shirt for young Dele Alli, and on the biggest stage!

Just 27 minutes into the tie, Harry Winks spreads the ball out wide to a motoring Kieran Trippier, who cushions a cross along the box, with Dele Alli on hand to tap home.

Wembley erupts into absolute anarchy, as Tottenham are 1-0 up against the Champions League holder Real Madrid.

Just 30 minutes later, and it’s that man again! After a solo jinking run, Dele Alli lets fly from outside the box, clipping the defender on the way through as the ball sails into the net.

Eruption.

Ten minutes later, and Dele picks the ball up again in midfield. This time he flicks the ball with the outside of his boot, sending Harry Kane away, who in turn rolls the ball across to Eriksen.

Wembley is stunned into manic silence. Tottenham are 3-0 up against Madrid.

Lucas Moura vs United

Not many Spurs fans will need reminding of this one.

With only a handful of starts to his name in a Tottenham shirt, Lucas Moura became Tottenham’s all time top goal scorer at Old Trafford after only one visit.

Before this day, Pochettino had never scored a goal away to United, yet alone won there. Lucas Moura changed this.

The little Brazilian ran the channels, held the ball up, and drove at defenders all game, slamming home a brace to sink United in a 3-0 victory.

This performance would go on to win Moura the Premier League player of the month for August.
