‘Top four secured’ – Some Spurs fans react to club announcement

Some Spurs fans are delighted to hear that the club have reached an agreement with Jan Vertonghen to extend the defender’s stay until the end of the season.

Vertonghen’s contract was due to run out at the end of this month and there were question marks raised on whether the centre back was going to commit himself to the Lilywhites until the end of the campaign (ESPN).

However, reports indicated that Spurs expected the long-serving defender to see out the season in North London (Football Insider), with Jose Mourinho confirming that Vertonghen has his complete trust (Football.London).

Tottenham have now confirmed that the Belgian international, along with Michel Vorm, have both signed temporary extensions in order to see out the season with the club.

Some Tottenham fans were particularly delighted that the 33-year-old could get a proper send-off at the end of the campaign after spending eight fantastic seasons at the club.

Here’s how they reacted to the news:

I never doubted that Vertonghen would commit himself to the club until the end of the season. However, It is clear that he is on his way out of the club in the summer.

It would be impossible to give him the send-off he deserves with no fans in the stadium but it is certainly preferable to his Spurs career ending abruptly at the end of June.

With games coming thick and fast over the next month or two, I expect the Belgian to play an important part in our final run in, even though he probably will start most games from the bench.
