‘Top, top player’ – Darren Anderton names the defender Spurs should land ahead of Arsenal

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Darren Anderton believes the North Londoners should launch a bid for Brighton’s Ben White this summer.

White has been heavily linked with a move to rivals Arsenal, who are said to have had a £40million bid snubbed with talks ongoing (Sky Sports).

The Gunners are expected to return with an improved offer to improve their backline ahead of next season.

The 23-year-old made made 36 Premier League appearances for Brighton last season and impressed during his stint on loan at Leeds United in the prior campaign (transfermarkt).

Anderton believes that following the departure of Jan Vertonghen and with Toby Alderweireld entering the latter stages of his career, White would be a shrewd signing.

Football.London claimed recently that a new central defender with leadership qualities is one of Tottenham’s main priorities during this summer’s transfer window.

Speaking to GentingBet before the news that the Paulo Fonseca deal had fallen through, Anderton also named Roma’s Gianluca Mancini as another sensible signing.

He said: “Gianluca Mancini would be a great defensive addition for Tottenham. It would also make sense with the new manager incoming who trusts players that he’s had before – it usually works out that way,

“The Italian mentality is usually all about defending properly and Tottenham need that.

“I think we’ve been blessed with Toby and Jan over the years. Unfortunately, Jan’s moved on and Toby’s getting to the highlight of his career but still never lets you down. But the transition has to happen at some point.

“Saying that, I’d love to see Tottenham go for Ben White. I think that he is a top, top player. Really impressed with him.

“I’d probably play him in the England team to be honest. I think he might be a better defender than the rest of them.

“So, that’s one I would really like to see us go for but I think a lot of the big boys are going to be after Ben this summer.”
