Cristian Romero appears to be edging closer to sealing an exit from Tottenham Hotspur, with Atlético Madrid making significant progress in their efforts to land the centre-back.
Earlier this week, Inter Milan agreed a fee with Tottenham for Romero, but their inability to complete the deal has allowed Atlético Madrid to swoop in.
The La Liga side have been in talks with the centre-back’s camp over recent days after first having shown an interest in him last summer.
Sources indicate Romero prefers linking up with Diego Simeone’s side over Inter, and it now appears that the Spanish side are making progress in their efforts to finalise an agreement.

Atletico Madrid clear ‘frontrunners’ for Tottenham’s Cristian Romero
Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed what other sources have been reporting over the last 48 hours by stating that Atletico are now preparing to send an official bid for the Argentine.
He asserts the Colchoneros are now the ‘clear frontrunners’ in the race for Romero, as they continue negotiations with Spurs as well as the player’s camp.
Romano wrote on X: Atlético Madrid prepare new official bid for Cuti Romero as clear frontrunners in race for the defender. Talks are taking place on both club and player side as Atléti are ahead and Cuti wants the move. Negotiations underway.”
Romero has agreed personal terms with Atlético Madrid
Marca reporter Matteo Moretto goes a step further than even Romano, claiming that the centre-back has reached a ‘total agreement’ on a new contract with the La Liga side.
He adds that the 28-year-old is now just waiting for the two clubs to finalise the final details of the transfer.
Moretto writes on X: “Atlético Madrid has reached a total agreement with Cuti Romero and is awaiting to finalize the details with Tottenham.”
