Tottenham abandon race to sign prolific forward this summer – Journalist

The Sun reporter Tom Barclay has revealed he has heard from his sources that Santiago Gimenez is no longer a target for Tottenham Hotspur.

Gimenez has been one of the most prolific strikers across Europe over the last couple of years, with the centre-forward even breaking Luis Suarez’s record for the most Eredivisie goals in a calendar year in 2023 (AS).

While there had already been a lot of speculation linking the 23-year-old with a move to Spurs over recent months, the rumours have intensified over the last few days after the striker was spotted at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last Sunday during the North London Derby.

Tottenham pull out of race for Santiago Gimenez

Over the last 48 hours or so, various outlets have named the Lilywhites as one of the favourites to land the Mexican international, who is thought to be valued at around £43m (CalcioMercato.it).

However, Barclay has now contradicted that information, with the journalist taking to social media to insist that the Feyenoord star is no longer considered a target by Ange Postecoglou’s side.

I am not too disappointed to hear this as I had my doubts over whether Gimenez would be able to translate his Eredivisie exploits to the Premier League. Tottenham should ideally be going after a number nine who is proven at this level, with Ivan Toney obviously being the standout option.
