Tottenham and 19 other Premier League clubs agree to introduce new offside technology

Alasdair Gold has confirmed that all 20 Premier League clubs have agreed to the introduction of a semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) next season.

The Premier League currently uses Hawk-Eye to assess offside decisions, which is the same technology that is used in other sports such as tennis and cricket.

However, that is about to change as all the top-flight sides unanimously voted that a semi-automated system would be used to make those decisions.

Semi-automated offsides will be in use next season

Gold reveals that technology is expected to be implemented in the Premier League after one of the autumn international breaks.

The said technology uses optical player tracking and is thus expected to provide quicker and more accurate decisions. This is because SAOT removes the manual element of detecting when the ball has been kicked and placing the lines onto players and to pitch level.

Further, the journalist asserts that the change will also produce high-quality broadcast graphics, which is expected to improve bother the broadcast and in-stadium experience.

This has been a long time coming as some of those offside calls were taking too much time, which has the effect of killing the momentum that some teams have built.

We have already seen in other tournaments that SAOT considerably reduces the time taken on those decisions, thus speeding up the game and making it a more watchable affair.
