Tottenham are more likely to move for Ivan Toney next year if Harry Kane leaves on a free transfer at the end of his contract.
Ivan Toney was the second-highest-scoring Englishman last season, with 21 goals in 35 games for Brentford (Transfermarkt).
The prolific forward’s tally was only bettered by Kane, who bagged an incredible 32 goals in all competitions for Spurs (Transfermarkt).

It figures, then, that Toney has been earmarked as the natural successor to Kane if the England captain were to leave Tottenham (Football Insider).
The Tottenham striker is subject to increasing interest from Bayern Munich this summer (Daily Mirror).
The only problem is, Toney is currently serving an eight-month ban from football due to being found guilty of breaching FA betting rules. The 27-year-old was charged with 262 breaches between February 2017 and January 2021 (Sky Sports).
Tottenham do want Ivan Toney, but not this summer
It seems the North London club have a “contingency” plan in place when it comes to the problem of replacing Harry Kane, and Ivan Toney is certainly part of that solution, but on one condition.
Miguel Delaney wrote in the Independent’s Reading the Game newsletter: “[Spurs] have been looking at a range of attacking options. The club really like Ivan Toney but that would more likely be one if Kane leaves on a free next summer, given his suspension.”

It makes perfect sense that we would only sign Ivan Toney next summer, as it would be no good losing Kane and then not being able to use his replacement until halfway through the season.
No one wants Kane to leave, but if he were to stick around this year and then move on a free, at least we know Toney would be more readily available.
