Tottenham boss believes this is a cause for concern

Tottenham Hotspur managed to leapfrog their London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea in midweek by putting three past Southampton at Wembley.

Spurs lost their third place position last weekend after the loss to Arsenal, but it didn’t take them long to snatch it back.

However, despite winning the game 3-1, and looking comfortable for large parts, Southampton did create a lot of chances.

Not only did they grab a late goal, but they also hit the woodwork three times, and pulled a double save out of Hugo Lloris.

Tottenham have been guilty of giving away points from winning positions this season, against the likes of Watford, PSV, Inter Milan, and Arsenal.

They very nearly handed Wolves a draw after being 3-0 up in that particular game.

Spurs take on Barcelona this week, and will be hoping to lose any defensive frailties by that point.

Long-term partners Vertonghen and Alderweireld are now back in defence together, so this could make all the difference.

Pochettino was asked whether it was a cause for concern (Football London): “Yeah but I think it is important to understand at 3-0 up [against Southampton], the previous games were very tough and emotional games, you can drop your focus. And after you want to reconnect again, it is late and it is difficult to come back.

“It is easy to lose focus but it is so difficult to switch on again – and that is important to understand. I think that was the problem more than the tactics and our performance being poor.

“That was the problem and we need to understand that we cannot lose the focus during 90 minutes. What happened, happened during the game.

“On the video. We work on the video. We work talking with individual players, with the strikers, the keepers. I think it is different because it is impossible to work on the pitch too much. Yes, that is the only way we can work and improve.”
