Tottenham break 125-game record in Champions League draw, but they were lucky to do so

Tottenham Hotspur scraped a 0-0 draw against AS Monaco in the Champions League and there was something unique about the final result.

Tottenham Hotspur looked to return to winning ways in the Champions League after a weekend defeat to Aston Villa, but Monaco had other ideas.

The Ligue 1 club dominated Spurs, but failed to secure a victory due to the heroics of Guglielmo Vicario and their own wastefulness.

Tottenham would have entered the top eight of the league phase with a win over Monaco. However, Thomas Frank’s men have dropped to 15th place, directly below Galatasaray, Qarabag and Sporting CP.

Tottenham record first goalless draw in more than two years

Tottenham’s midweek clash with Monaco was supposed to be a match full of goals. The French side had not kept a clean sheet in a competitive fixture since May, while Spurs had only failed to score in one match this season.

Despite this, neither side were able to break the deadlock and the fixture ended in a goalless draw. Interestingly, this is the first time Tottenham have recorded a 0-0 draw since March 2023. Ange Postecoglou never oversaw a game without any goals during his two years at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The last time Spurs drew 0-0 before Wednedsay night was another Champions League fixture which took place more than two and a half years ago.

Antonio Conte’s Tottenham team were held by AC Milan in their last 16 second leg tie, which saw the Serie A outfit go through after winning the first leg by a single goal. The Italian manager would go on to be sacked later that month.

Spurs do not look hard to defend against

When a team faces Tottenham, they are probably more concerned about breaking down the Spurs defence than preventing them from scoring. This is because Frank’s side do not look threatening enough in attack.

The midfield is a major part of the problem, with Xavi Simons yet to get going at Tottenham. Having a first choice left winger who has not registered a goal contribution this season is not ideal either.

If Frank takes one thing from the Monaco game, it should be that Spurs need to find a way to create more goalscoring opportunities.
