Tottenham call for action after Davinson Sanchez suffers online racist abuse

Tottenham Hotspur have taken to Twitter this evening to voice their disgust at the racial abuse which Davinson Sanchez has suffered following the defeat to Newcastle United.

The central defender was named in Jose Mourinho’s starting eleven against the Magpies and had a difficult afternoon at St James’ Park.

Sanchez gave the ball away for Newcastle’s opening goal which allowed Joelinton to finish from close range beyond Hugo Lloris.

Despite Harry Kane scoring a brace, a defensive mixup saw Joe Rodon and Davinson Sanchez clatter into each other with Joe Willock gifted the opportunity to smash the ball high into the roof of the net to see the North Londoners give up the chance to go fourth in the Premier League table.

Sanchez was the victim of abusive comments online with the defender sharing an Instagram story of a screenshot that showed users commenting monkey emojis on one of his posts.

The club wrote: “We are disgusted by the racist messages received by Davinson Sanchez today and are calling on social media platforms to take action.

“We stand with you @DaoSanchez26, and all those continuing to suffer abuse online.”
