Tottenham choose between Mathys Tel and Solanke for Champions League squad

Thomas Frank faced a big decision for Tottenham’s upcoming Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund, due to a new UEFA rule change.

It has been widely reported that Frank’s days at Spurs could be numbered after the frustrations of the Tottenham fans boiled over from the stands following the loss to West Ham.

Many reports suggest that Frank will still be in charge for the Dortmund clash, although it is unclear if he will still be in the job for Burnley at the weekend.

The 52-year-old faced a huge decision heading into the Dortmund clash after making a change to Tottenham’s Champions League squad last month.

Only one of Mathys Tel or Dominic Solanke can be in Tottenham’s Champions League squad

After initially being left out of Tottenham’s squad, Mathys Tel was added to the Champions League list in place of the injured Dominic Solanke for the Lilywhites’ clash against Slavia Prague last month.

The North London club made use of a UEFA rule that allows a team to bring in a squad substitute if a player has been ill or injured for 60 days.

According to Football.London, now that Solanke is back fit, UEFA’s rule allow the England international to come straight back into the squad in place of Tel.

The Tottenham boss thus had to decide whether to bring Solanke back in for the final two Champions League fixtures or to continue with the Frenchman.

Frank makes his decision and it may cause problems

According to L’Equipe, Thomas Frank has now made his decision, with Dominic Solanke reclaiming his spot in the Tottenham squad despite not starting a game since his injury return.

This means that Mathys Tel drops out of the squad once again, joining Tottenham’s extensive injury contingent. Conor Gallagher, Radu Dragusin, and Yves Bissouma may be fit, but they are also ineligible for the fixture as they are not in Spurs’ current Champions League squad.

Spurs will get a chance to make up to three changes to the squad in the knockout rounds, but it remains to be seen whether Thomas Frank is still in a job by then.
