Tottenham confirm departure of 22-year-old on season-long loan deal

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Alfie Whiteman has joined Swedish Allsvenskan side Degerfors IF on a season-long loan deal.

The 22-year-old caught the eye during Tottenham’s pre-season campaign with solid performances against Colchester United and MK Dons, having been selected ahead of Joe Hart, who completed his switch to Celtic soon after.

Whiteman is currently behind club captain Hugo Lloris and recent signing Pierluigi Gollini in the goalkeeping pecking order in North London, while there is also competition from Brandon Austin, who is back at the club following a loan stint at Orlando City.

The shot-stopper made his senior debut for Tottenham under the management of Jose Mourinho, when he came off the bench during the second half of a 4-0 Europa League win against Ludogorets in November 2020 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Whiteman showed during pre-season that he is a very capable goalkeeper, however, the route to first-team football at Tottenham is no more than being a third choice, especially following the arrival of Gollini.

Regular first-team football in Sweden will certainly help to progress his career, which ultimately could be away from Spurs if he has the desire to play week in, week out.
