Tottenham confirm fifth signing of the summer transfer window

Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Emerson Royal from Barcelona, having penned a five-year contract and will wear the number twelve shirt.

The Brazilian international has earned four senior caps to date and spent the past two seasons on loan at Real Betis, who he helped to qualify for the Europa League last season under the management of Manuel Pellegrini.

Emerson becomes Tottenham’s fifth signing of the transfer window, following in the footsteps of Pierluigi Gollini, Bryan Gil, Cristian Romero and Pape Matar Sarr.

Japhet Tanganga has started all three of Tottenham’s Premier League matches this season at right-back ahead of Matt Doherty.

Arsenal were also said to have been interested in signing Emerson, who joined Barcelona in 2019 from Atlético Mineiro, but it was Spurs who moved quickest to land their man (The Athletic).

Emerson made 38 appearances for Betis in all competitions last season, scoring three goals and had also started all three of Barcelona’s La Liga fixtures during the current campaign (transfermarkt).

Emerson will add much-needed space to the right side of the Tottenham defence and his more of an attacking wing-back, rather than a traditional right-back which fits in with Nuno’s traditional style of play.
