Tottenham confirm mutual termination of 31-year-old’s contract

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Matt Doherty has left the club after mutually terminating his contract, allowing him to join Atletico Madrid (Rob Guest).

Doherty arrived at Spurs from Wolves in 2020 and has made 71 appearances in all competitions but has struggled to hold down a regular first-team place this season under Antonio Conte.

The Republic of Ireland international showed impressive form in the build-up to his season-ending knee injury at Aston Villa in April of last year and has been unable to replicate the same levels of performance this season and now heads to La Liga with no option to make the deal permanent (90min).

Doherty will not be the first Tottenham right-back to have joined Atletico after Kieran Trippier made the same move in 2019, before returning to the Premier League to sign for Newcastle United last year.

SpursWeb Opinion

Many fans would have rather seen Emerson Royal leave instead of Doherty, given his ability to also cover the left side of the defence. However, it now appears that it will be a Porro/Royal axis at right wing-back at least, until the season ends. Everyone at The Spurs Web would like to wish Matt all the best for the future.
