Tottenham confirm Son requires surgery after suffering injury at Marseille

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Heung-min Son requires surgery following the facial injury that he sustained in last night’s match against Marseille.

The 30-year-old went off in the first half at the Stade Velodrome after a collision with Chancel Mbemba and looked very wobbly as he left the pitch.

Spurs have now revealed that the striker has sustained a fracture around his left eye socket and will now go under the knife.

While the club did not make any statement on how long he is expected to be out of action for, PA Sport journalist Jonathan Veal believes that his involvement at the World Cup with South Korea could now be over.

The Daily Mail previously revealed that there were fears immediately after the final whistle at the Stade Velodrome that Son had suffered a break of the zygomatic bone on the left side of his face.

A statement on the official Spurs site read: “We can confirm that Heung-Min Son will undergo surgery to stabilise a fracture around his left eye.

“The South Korea international suffered the injury during the first half of Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League victory at Olympique Marseille.

“Following surgery, Son will commence rehabilitation with our medical staff and we shall update supporters further in due course.”

This is heartbreaking news for Son who must be worrying about his hopes of playing in the World Cup. At club level, Antonio Conte now faces a selection headache of a lack of attacking options ahead of Sunday’s visit of Liverpool with Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison both having been out for a number of weeks and are now joined on the sidelines by Son.

Conte will have to weigh up whether to play a front two of Harry Kane and Lucas Moura, or even bring Bryan Gil into the starting line-up.
