Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Mason Melia

Earlier this month, Tottenham Hotspur were linked with a move for Mason Melia, a 17-year-old striker Irish striker who plays for St Patrick’s Athletic.

The forward’s record has been impressive. As a teenager, he made history last year by becoming the youngest goalscorer in League of Ireland history when he netted against UCD at just 15 years and 281 days old.

That historic moment was followed by an impressive season in which Melia made 41 appearances for St Pat’s across all competitions, demonstrating maturity far beyond his years.

His form had caught the attention of not just Spurs, but Celtic as well, who were reported to have shown interest in the forward.  However, their interest did not yield the result they desired as the young Irish man has now opted to join Spurs instead.

Spurs confirm the signing of Melia

Tottenham Hotspur have now officially signed Mason Melia from St Patrick Athletic for a fee of £1.6m deal plus add-ons (Tom Barclay).

However, because of Brexit rules, he can’t actually sign until January 2026 the first window after his 18th birthday. This deal makes him the first million-pound player to be signed from Ireland.

The Tottenham club statement reads: “We are delighted to announce that we have reached an agreement with League of Ireland side St Patrick’s Athletic for the transfer of Mason Melia. The 17-year-old forward has agreed a deal that will run until 2031 and will join us in January, 2026”

Melia joins Kevin Danso, Antonin Kinsky and Mathys Tel as winter additions to the club. It remains to be seen the role the forward plays in Ange Postecoglou’s side, but the fact that he remains at his current club until 2026 is proof that he is one for the future.
