The German international moved to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium back in the January transfer window for the remainder of the campaign.

With Heung-min Son on international duty at the Asia Cup with South Korea and Dejan Kulusevski sidelined through injury, Werner was brought in to help provide depth to Ange Postecoglou’s attack during the winter.

Tottenham once again have the option within the loan agreement to make the transfer permanent should they decide to take the former Chelsea player off RB Leipzig on a permanent basis.

The 28-year-old made fourteen appearances for the North Londoners across the Premier League and FA Cup, scoring two goals and providing three assists (transfermarkt).

A statement on the official Spurs site read: “We are delighted to announce an agreement for Timo Werner to rejoin us on loan from RB Leipzig for the 2024/25 season, with an option to make the deal permanent.”

Postecoglou was tight-lipped in April on the prospect of Werner returning to the club when he told the Metro: “In terms of his future, yeah I think like most players all these decisions will be made at the appropriate time.

“He’s been great for us. He was an important signing, I said at the time, people forget that when we signed him Sonny [Son Heung-min] wasn’t here, he was away at the Asian Cup and then Richy [Richarlison] got injured.

“So we would have had a massive hole in our line-up without Timo there, and it’s fair to say he’s made an impact in every game.

“Yeah, he’d probably like a couple more goals but at the same time he’s an important part of our structure and I thought he was really good on the weekend. He has been in the last few games but I do think there’s more improvement in him as he understands our game more.”

Werner was forced to miss the last few matches of the season with a hamstring injury and will now link up with the rest of the Tottenham first team squad at Hotspur Way for pre-season training in a few weeks.

While some fans may be disappointed at the news and question the level of ambition the club may be prepared to show in the summer market, it’s also worth considering the fact that he is simply a replacement for Bryan Gil who is likely to leave this summer.

Tottenham have been short of depth on the left side, especially with the initial injury and subsequent departure of Ivan Perisic.

Manor Solomon is another who has failed to make any impact, partly due to injury issues and is another who could depart N17.

The Werner deal will not impact the transfer budget, allowing Johan Lange and his team to bring in a replacement winger along with another forward to help Ange Postecoglou have the depth to compete both domestically and in the Europa League next season.
