Tottenham contenders to sign £40m Dutch star in January

Reports suggest that Tottenham could be real contenders to sign young Ajax midfielder Frenkie De Jong in January, after the starlet was linked to Barcelona in the summer.

Despite not making a single summer signing, the first Premier League club in history to do this, Pochettino’s Tottenham may look to strengthen the squad come the new year.

The Holland U21 midfielder was closely linked with a move to the Nou Camp this summer, but he decided to stay put after Ajax qualified for the Champions League.

However, if the Dutch giants are knocked out of the competition by January, it is possible the De Jong might rethink his situation, giving Spurs a chance to nip in ahead of Barca.

Tottenham have a good relationship with Ajax when it comes to purchases, with Jan Vertonghen, Christian Eriksen and Davinson Sanchez all coming from the club.

Barcelona seem to have moved their immediate attentions onto Manchester United’s Paul Pogba as a new midfield giant.

De Jong had this to say on his Spain links last week: “Maybe someday I’ll join Barcelona, but not this season.

“I have already played a binding match with Ajax. I’m staying at Ajax. I think it will be a good year.”

What do you think? Would you like to see Spurs bring De Jong in?
