‘Tottenham could be an option’ – La Liga expert on Barcelona defender

La Liga expert, Euan McTear, believes that Tottenham Hotspur could be an option for Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti this summer.

The defender only accumulated 638 minutes in La Liga season and the French international has endured various injury issues in his last three campaigns, making for a lot of time on the sidelines which has somewhat stalled his career.

Euan Mctear told Football Fancast about Umtiti’s situation and why Tottenham could be an option: “To go to Tottenham is a step down from Barcelona but it’s a step up from sitting on the bench and even in the stands.

“There’s a World Cup next year, so I’m sure he wants to get back playing, so I’m sure Tottenham could be an option.”

Umtiti was not included in the French Euro 2020 squad despite being a key part of the 2018 team that won the World Cup in Russia.

The defender is also reportedly not in Ronald Koeman’s plans moving forward and Barcelona are now actively looking to sell the defender this summer despite his contract running until 2023.

Tottenham are already making moves for a centre-back, with Tottenham ‘leading the race’ for Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu (Fabrizio Romano).

Fabio Paratici, new managing director of football, is still yet to make his first signing. Tottenham have understandably been linked to a few centre-backs this summer: Joachim Andersen and Jules Kounde being two other names that have cropped up.

Centre-back is no doubt an area of the pitch that Tottenham need to improve. Umtiti is an interesting one. In 2018, it would’ve been considered a major coup, but injuries have rendered is progress null. If he can be kept fit, it’s worth it. But it’s a risk.
