Tottenham Hotspur may be handed a golden chance to sign one of their long-term targets following the latest update on his future at Manchester City.

The Tottenham backline may see some big changes ahead of next season, with reports indicating that both Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven could leave Spurs this summer.

Luka Vuskovic has been tipped to be a regular starter for Tottenham next season after shining on loan at Hamburg, but Roberto De Zerbi may also want to add some experience to his backline.

It has now been revealed that the Lilywhites could get a golden opportunity to land an England international, who has been on their radar for a long time.

Tottenham could land John Stones on a free transfer

GiveMeSport have now claimed that John Stones has been admired at Tottenham for a long time, with their interest in the centre-back going back more than five years.

It is revealed that the most serious approach that Spurs made for the centre-back was back in 2020, when they proposed a loan deal with the option to make it permanent for £20m.

That offer was turned down by City, even though the former Everton man was not playing regularly at the time, but the Lilywhites could get a chance to finally get their man this summer.

The report says that Stones is set to move on from the Etihad Stadium when his contract runs out this summer, with no sign of a new deal being offered by Pep Guardiola’s side.

Stones’ injury record may be a big concern for Spurs

The 31-year-old is a proven performer in the Premier League and, given his ability on the ball, should fit seamlessly into Roberto De Zerbi’s system.

However, the England international continues to be plagued by injuries, with his thigh problems restricting him to just 15 appearances for City this term.

Given the injury problems Tottenham have had in their last two seasons, the club may be hesitant to add another injury-prone player to their squad.
