Tottenham defender emerges as surprise Man Utd target

Manchester United are set to be on the lookout for defensive reinforcements as Eric Bailly is rumored to be close to an exit. The Red Devils were linked with a number of central defenders in the summer including Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld.

It has now emerged that Manchester United are again looking to raid Spurs for a defender. However, their target is not the 29-year-old Belgian but rather his defensive partner Davinson Sanchez.

According to a report in the Spanish sports magazine, Don Balón, United are planning to make a surprise swoop for Sanchez this January. The report claims that the 22-year-old Columbian is frustrated with a lack of opportunities, as Pochettino prefers a pairing of Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen when the duo are fit.

I think it is safe to say that this is unlikely to materialize as Sanchez can hardly complain about a lack of game time since he arrived at the club. The defender played 41 times last season after arriving from Ajax and has featured on 18 occasions so far this season.

Given that Toby’s contract is running out and Vertonghen is getting the twilight of his Spurs career, Sanchez is likely to be a mainstay at the heart of Tottenham’s defense in years to come. It is thus highly unlikely that Levy will consider an offer from Man Utd for the Columbian.
