Tottenham’s European journey takes its next turn after the Champions League draw reveals who stands between Spurs and the quarter-finals.

Tottenham Hotspur enjoyed a successful Champions League phase campaign, securing automatic qualification for the round of 16.

Tottenham already knew before today’s draw that they would face one of Galatasaray or Atletico Madrid, following the pair’s respective play-off victories over Juventus and Club Brugge earlier in the week.

Tottenham will play Atletico Madrid in Champions League R16

With the play-off rounds complete, UEFA have now conducted the draw for the Champions League knockout stages, which was hosted at the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland.

Spurs will face Atletico Madrid in the last 16 of the competition as they aim to continue their European run.

The first leg of their round of 16 tie will take place at the Wanda Metropolitano, with the second leg set to be held at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham are at risk of missing out on European football next season

Spurs currently run the risk of missing out on Europe next season following a poor Premier League campaign that has left them in 16th place.

The only way Tottenham can return to this competition next term is by winning the tournament outright or if something dramatic happens in the English top flight.

Going all the way would require Tottenham to replicate their 2019 run to the Champions League final, but this time they must take it a step further by winning the competition.

The last time a previous UEFA Europa League winner went on to lift the UEFA Champions League was when FC Porto did so in 2003-04. Tottenham must now repeat a feat that has not been achieved in over two decades.

When are the 2025/26 Champions League knockout stages?
