Tottenham discover referee selection for Everton clash amid shocking run of VAR luck

Tottenham Hotspur have now discovered the referee for their decisive Premier League clash against Everton on the final gameweek of the season.

Tottenham Hotspur have barely had many decisions go their way in the Premier League this season.

Last matchweek brought about more of the same for the Lilywhites as yet another fifty-fifty decision went against Spurs in the game against Chelsea.

This came from the incident between Marc Cucurella and Micky van de Ven, with the Chelsea full-back seen to have dragged Van de Ven down in the box, but the calls for a penalty were waved away, with VAR ruling that the ball was not yet in play when the offence was committed.

Had Spurs been awarded a penalty, they could well have slotted it and secured their Premier League status at the Bridge with a game to spare.

Tottenham vs Everton referee confirmed as Michael Oliver appointed

The fight for survival is now set to go down to matchweek 38 when Tottenham face off against Everton at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The task at hand remains the same as in the Chelsea game, with Spurs needing at least a draw to secure their league status. Ahead of that encounter, the Premier League has confirmed the match officials on its official website.

Michael Oliver has been selected as the referee, with Stuart Burt and James Mainwaring as assistants. The fourth official is Bobby Madley, while VAR will be Paul Tierney, alongside assistant VAR Mark Scholes.

Spurs record under Michael Oliver offers cautious optimism

Oliver is a referee with immense Premier League experience and has officiated Spurs games several times in his career.

Tottenham also have a decent record in games Oliver has taken charge of, winning 28 out of 55, drawing 11 and losing 16. With such a record, the Lilywhites will be slightly confident about their chances heading into Sunday’s encounter.

However, Spurs will want to tread carefully in their own box, as Oliver is not shy to award penalties, especially in favour of Everton.

In his history, Oliver has awarded 16 penalties to Everton, the second most he has given to any English side in his career.

Although Spurs have still won more games when the official has been in charge, Everton have won 23 of the 64 matches Oliver has officiated, drawing 22 and losing 19.
