Tottenham’s pursuit of a £40m AS Roma defender appears to be getting a lot harder as the transfer window draws closer.

Even if Spurs manage to avoid relegation, one would expect big changes to the squad this summer as Roberto De Zerbi goes about putting his own imprint on the team he inherited.

According to reports, Tottenham have begun making plans for the summer window and identifying their top transfer targets.

Spurs were credited with an interest in a Roma defender during the January window, and they are set to reignite their pursuit of the player when the transfer window reopens.

Tottenham battling three Premier League giants for Wesley

Last week, Calciomercato.it reported that Spurs are set to make a move for Brazilian right-back Wesley, who is enjoying a sensational debut season in Serie A since swapping Flamengo for the Italian capital last summer.

A new report in CaughtOffside confirms that Tottenham are one of the clubs vying for the signature of the 25-year-old, who has scored five times in the Italian top-flight this season.

However, the outlet reveals that the full-back’s list of admirers is growing ahead of the summer window, with several other Premier League clubs also expressing interest.

Newcastle United and Arsenal have been impressed by Wesley, while Man City have also entered the race for the defender.

Pep Guardiola is thought to be keen on signing a defender who can play multiple roles in possession, with the Brazilian seen as someone who suits his system.

Is Wesley likely to leave Roma this summer?

CaughtOffside also reveal that the interest in the right-back is not restricted to English clubs, with Barcelona and Real Madrid also monitoring his situation.

With Wesley rapidly becoming one of the most talked-about defenders in Europe, Roma may face ‘one of the biggest transfer battles of the summer’ if they fight to keep the player.

According to sources in Italy, the Giallorossi could demand around £40m for the Spurs target this summer.
