Tottenham Hotspur might have avoided relegation this season, but statistics show that in most of the last 18 Premier League campaigns, they would have been a Championship side.
Tottenham Hotspur can rightly point to their home form as one of the major reasons why they spent most of the season battling at the bottom end of the Premier League table.
A run of three wins, six draws and 10 defeats left Spurs with the third-worst home record in the division, with only relegated Wolves and Burnley performing worse on their own ground.
Ironically, it was on their home soil that they confirmed their Premier League status, as Tottenham secured a 1-0 win against Everton at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on the final day.
Had the Lilywhites fallen to an 11th home defeat, they would have been relegated after West Ham United beat Leeds United 3-0 at the London Stadium.
Tottenham home record matched an unwanted Opta statistic
According to data from Opta, Tottenham’s home form would ordinarily have been enough to send them down this season.
That is because sides that pick up three wins or fewer at home during a Premier League campaign almost always end up in the Championship, with Hull City in 2008/09 the only other side to avoid relegation after recording just three home victories across a league season.
Spurs have now joined Hull City in matching their new record, although they will be hoping to improve their home form domestically next campaign.
Relegation rivals West Ham, meanwhile, posted a far stronger home record than Tottenham after managing six wins, four draws and nine defeats at the London Stadium, but still went down.
Spurs away form proved crucial under Roberto De Zerbi
While Tottenham struggled badly at home, their away form ultimately proved to be the difference in the survival battle.
Compared to their record at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Spurs were among the stronger away sides in the Premier League during the 2025/26 campaign.
They ranked sixth based on away form after winning seven, drawing five and losing seven, collecting 26 points on the road.
West Ham, on the other hand, struggled away from home and finished with the fourth-worst away record in the division after picking up just 17 points on their travels.
Under Roberto De Zerbi, though, Spurs’ home form has already improved, with Tottenham unbeaten in home matches since the Italian arrived.
He has collected five points from his opening three home games, hinting at signs of progress compared to his predecessors.
