Tottenham face £400k-per-week hurdle in push to sign striker with 9 goals this season

A new report has shed light on whether Tottenham Hotspur are likely to be able to bring a lethal striker back to the Premier League in January.

Ivan Toney has been prolific for Al-Ahli since his £40m switch from the Vitality Stadium to Saudi Arabia back in the summer of 2024.

A number of sources have suggested that Tottenham may be prepared to offer Toney a route back to the Premier League.

Speaking in the Tottenham Hotspur fan forum last week, Thomas Frank admitted that he would love to have Toney at Spurs, which got some supporters very excited.

Tottenham could face competition from Premier League rivals for Ivan Toney

Over the last few days, a number of outlets have suggested that Toney will not push to return to the Premier League in January, which comes as a blow to Tottenham’s chances of re-signing the England international.

In a new report, Football Insider have now claimed that Spurs are not alone in their admiration for the 29-year-old.

The report reveals that Everton are also eyeing a move for Toney, with David Moyes’ men keen on adding a proven goalscorer to their squad in January.

The outlet goes on to point out that the former Brentford striker has a good relationship with Frank, and that may be key to the Lilywhites persuading the striker to arrive at N17.

Spurs have one big roadblock in their pursuit of Toney

Football Insider also spoke to journalist Pete O’Rourke, who stated that there is a big stumbling block for Tottenham in their efforts to sign the Al-Ahli star.

The journalist pointed out that Toney is on huge wages at the Saudi Pro League club – thought to be around £400k-per-week – and Spurs would not be able to match the striker’s current salary.

Speaking about Toney’s future, O’Rourke said: “Well, yeah, obviously you’ve got the Tottenham link, Thomas Frank and Ivan Toney from before.

They had great success together at Brentford. Tottenham [are] being linked with a number of strikers as it does seem that they might want to bring in a new number nine in January.

“The problem with Ivan Toney is it’s not an easy deal to do for various reasons. He’s on huge wages over there in the Saudi Pro League, so Tottenham wouldn’t be able to offer him the money that he’s earning out there in the Saudi Pro League.”
