Tottenham fans think one photo proves they were robbed of a penalty vs Chelsea

Tottenham Hotspur fans are convinced they have fresh evidence proving Spurs were wrongly denied a penalty against Chelsea, with new images from the incident now doing the rounds on social media.

Tottenham Hotspur fans have not held back from taking swipes at VAR this season, given the way several decisions have not gone their way.

Yesterday, in the clash against Chelsea, there was more controversy involving Spurs as they were denied a penalty by both the on-field referee and VAR.

This came after Marc Cucurella wrestled Micky van de Ven to the ground during a corner kick. The Chelsea man had no eyes on the ball and, as we have seen several times this season, those fouls are mostly given.

But this time the controversy centres on whether the ball was in play when the foul occurred. The on-field decision was that it was not in play, and the calls for a penalty were waved away, although Cucurella was eventually booked.

Tottenham fans claim Micky van de Ven penalty was denied against Chelsea

The Premier League Match Centre wrote about the VAR verdict: “The referee’s call of no penalty to Tottenham Hotspur was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed that the action from Cucurella had ended before the ball was in play.”

Tottenham fans have refused to take the officials at their word and have now shared images they believe prove Spurs should have been awarded a penalty.

In photos circulating on social media, the ball appears to already be in play when Cucurella begins grappling with van de Ven.

Based on those images, it does appear Tottenham may well have been denied a clear-cut penalty, which now leaves them needing a result heading into the final gameweek.

Spurs continue to suffer frustrating VAR decisions

James Maddison has since vented his frustration, agreeing with fans that the ball was in play and that Spurs should have had a penalty.

The Lilywhites will continue to wonder where their luck has gone this season, with several VAR decisions continuing to go against them.

Spurs are yet to be awarded a penalty this season despite several strong shouts for a spot-kick. Last gameweek, Maddison was brought down late on by Lucas Nmecha, but VAR ruled against awarding a penalty, continuing the trend of fifty-fifty calls going against Tottenham.
