Tottenham fans won’t love Paul Merson’s prediction for ‘nothing game’

Paul Merson has made his prediction for Tottenham Hotspur’s trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers and few will be surprised by how he expects the game to play out.

Tottenham are looking for a rare away win in the Premier League as they take on 17th-place Wolves. Ange Postecoglou will be looking to record a second consecutive league win after his triumph over a dismal Southampton side last Sunday, but his team’s away form this season has been a cause for concern.

Worse still, Spurs have a dreadful record against Wolves. The Black Country side have won four of the last six meetings between the teams, with Tottenham failing to beat their upcoming opponents since 2022 when Antonio Conte was in charge.

Last time Spurs and Wolves played at Molineux, two stoppage-time goals saw the visitors blow a lead they held for 88 minutes, resulting in a 2-1 defeat.

The time before, an Adama Traore goal with less than 10 minutes remaining was enough to see off Tottenham. The Lilywhites will be hoping to avoid such scenarios on Sunday.

Paul Merson predicts Tottenham to be defeated by Wolves

Wolves have struggled this season, however, they have managed to win three league games in a row, albeit against clubs near the bottom of the table.

Tottenham have a less impressive recent record and their participation in the Europa League could favour Wolves in this weekend’s clash.

Making his prediction on Sportskeeda, Merson said: “This is a nothing game for both teams.

“I’m picking Wolves to win because Tottenham have two season-defining matches, either side of this game, in the Europa League.

“Spurs’ season is on the line and fans must understand that even if they lose against Wolves, all that matters is that they beat Frankfurt in the Europa League!

“When Matheus Cunha got the ban, I thought Wolves would be in trouble. But credit to them, they have been decent in recent weeks. Obviously, the fact that the three teams below them have been poor has helped them, but they still had to go out and win games, which they did.”

Merson’s Prediction: Wolves 2-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs must focus on the Europa League

Tottenham failed to get the win against Frankfurt at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. However, they are still in the tie and have all the more reason to drop everything else and prioritise European football.

Wolves on the other hand have nothing left to play for, except to restore some pride in the league. They look safe from relegation, but will want to make sure of this on their own terms.

It is still realistic for the Wanderers to rise from their current position to 13th by the end of the season, which would put manager Vitor Pereira in a much better light.

With Wolves having some incentive, even if it is not much, and Spurs having little to no incentive at all to win, it will not be surprising if their poor away record continues.

Postecoglou needs every victory he can get, but ultimately, lifting the Europa League trophy is the only chance he has at remaining at the club next season.
