Tottenham find out which pot they are guaranteed for the Champions League next season

Tottenham Hotspur may be deep into preparations for the Champions League 2018/19 final against Liverpool on June 1, but they have received a welcome boost in their campaign for next season.

Until yesterday, it was up in the air whether Tottenham would be guaranteed a spot in pot three or pot two for the 2019/20 group stage draw.

Obviously, in theory, the better the pot, the more favourable the draw, although it does not always work out like this.

Spurs were in pot two this season, but were still put with the eventual champions of Spain, runners up in the Netherlands, and fourth place in Italy.

Talking of Italy, the Serie A came to a close yesterday, with Roma missing out on a top-four spot to Atlanta and Inter Milan.

If Roma had qualified for the CL group stages next season, they would have pushed Spurs down into pot three, as the Italian side have a better UEFA coefficient ranking.

So, Tottenham are now guaranteed at least pot two for next year. Why do I say ‘at least’? If Spurs win the Champions League final, they will, in fact, be elevated to pot 1.

Spurs Web Opinion:

I am hoping and praying that this article is irrelevant come June 2. If Spurs lift the trophy against Liverpool, they will enter the competition next season as a top-seeded team for the first time ever. What was Real Madrid’s record again? Three in a row?
