Tottenham Hotspur and London rivals Chelsea locked horns for the first time outside of England in Australia, and it is time for our first-half player ratings.
Tottenham first-half player ratings vs Chelsea
Antonin Kinsky – Barely troubled for most of the half despite Chelsea’s dominance in the early stages. He did manage to get a hand on Estevao’s header, but the Brazilian youngster generated enough power to beat him. 6.
Archie Gray – Not deployed in midfield this time, instead used at right-back, where he showed his quality by keeping Gittens quiet on that side. Although he could have looked to close the Chelsea winger a lot quicker when he delivered into the Spurs box for the Blues equaliser. 6.
Jan Paul van Hecke – A first pre-season start for the Dutchman since his move to Tottenham and the World Cup earlier in the summer. He showed a glimpse of what he is about with a strong early challenge outside his box, leaving a mark on Joao Pedro. 7.
Ben Davies – A quiet outing for the veteran, partnering Jan Paul van Hecke at the back. He kept things simple, recycling possession and moving the ball well. He did come to Spurs’ rescue, doing enough to put Joao Pedro off when the forward looked to strike inside the box following a sloppy Robertson giveaway. He did manage to flash a dangerous cross into the Chelsea box after an underlapping run from deep, but no one was there to tap it in. 6.
Andy Robertson – The Spurs full-back appeared to switch off at the back post for Chelsea’s equaliser as Estevao pounced on his lapse in concentration. Tottenham have barely threatened down the left in this game, and Robertson has also given the ball away cheaply on a few occasions. 5.
Sandro Tonali – A first goal for the big-money signing, who gave Spurs the lead against the run of play with a strike from outside the box that took a massive deflection off Levi Colwill. 8.
Lucas Bergvall – Yet another start for the Swede despite his desire to leave Tottenham. However, his commitment on the pitch cannot be faulted, full of running and energy as he helped Spurs press Chelsea high. 6.
Conor Gallagher – The Tottenham midfielder was once more deployed in the number ten role in the absence of James Maddison and was full of running, contributing in attack and dropping deep to help defensively. He showed he was up for the fight, even in a friendly, picking up a yellow card for a feisty challenge. 7.
Manor Solomon – The Israel international provided the assist for Tonali, picking out the Italian on the edge of the area. However, Spurs barely threatened for most of the half before that moment. 6.5.
Dominic Solanke – The forward has been barely involved, with few touches and no sight of goal. 5.
Mathys Tel – Forced into plenty of defensive work as Spurs struggled to create anything meaningful against their London rivals. He did have a half-chance after an Essugo pass fell his way, but he could not keep his effort on target. He then came close to scoring Tottenham’s second after showing lovely quick feet taking on Essugo, but his effort was well saved. 5.
