‘Tottenham got serious’ – Striker opens up on interest from Lilywhites in the summer

Wolfsburg striker, Wout Weghorst has once again opened up on the interest from Tottenham during the summer transfer window.

Weghorst claimed that Spurs became serious just before the summer window slammed shut, but the centre-forward eventually remained at Wolfsburg.

It was reported earlier this week that Tottenham are still interested in Weghorst and may return with an offer for him in January (SportBild – as relayed by Sport Witness).

The striker was linked with Spurs during the summer (Express), although the Lilywhites eventually signed Carlos Vinicius on loan from Benfica instead.

The Dutch forward has confirmed the reports before, revealing that Spurs did indeed show interest and that his head was turned.

Despite not making the move to the Premier League, Weghorst has registered an impressive 11 goals in 16 appearances in all competitions so far this season.

The Wolfsburg man has now reflected on the summer situation once more in an interview with De Telegraaf (as relayed by Sport Witness), claiming that he is happy at Wolfsburg, although he would not rule out a move to a bigger European club.

He said: “Shortly before the transfer market closed, Tottenham Hotspur got serious. Those were hectic days. You can then say very boldly that you focus on your own club, but subconsciously it does, of course, do something to you. You also saw it in my game.

“Looking back on that situation, I think: sometimes you also have to be satisfied. That does not mean that I do not want to make the step to the European top, on the contrary. But I am just very happy in Wolfsburg and I get a lot of appreciation here. I cherish that.”
