Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario is working on his biggest weakness with Italy this week

Guglielmo Vicario has not had any game time during the international break so far, but the Tottenham man is putting his time with the Italian team to good use.

Thomas Frank has made set pieces an important part of Tottenham’s training routine, and that is showing on the pitch.

Spurs appear a lot more resolute in defending set pieces than they did under Ange Postecoglou, while they are also posing more of a threat from corners and indirect free kicks.

The Tottenham players have spoken about the impact of the new set-piece coach Andreas Georgson, and supporters will like what a senior Spurs man has now said about set-piece training.

Tottenham number one Guglielmo Vicario is working hard on set-piece training

Tottenham’s main weakness in defending set pieces last season was arguably Vicario, who often did not cover himself in glory in dealing with corner kicks played into the near post area.

The Spurs number one was an unused substitute in Italy’s 3-1 win away at Estonia on Sunday, but he revealed that he and his teammates have been working hard on pieces in the training ground.

Vicario said ahead of the game (via Football.London): “Football requires great concentration now, when attacking and defending. We know that many goals are scored from set plays nowadays, so we have been working on those details to improve.”

Numbers suggest that Vicario has been unfairly criticised by Spurs fans

Over recent weeks, some Spurs fans have been calling for Thomas Frank to drop Vicario in light of some of the errors he has made.

However, according to stats from DataMB, across the top seven leagues in Europe, Vicario is number one for prevented goals, save percentage and passes completed as well as other key metrics.

Additionally, the 28-year-old also offers a lot from a leadership perspective, with Thomas Frank naming Vicario in his five-man Tottenham leadership group.
