Tottenham had ‘crazy money’ plan for Morgan Rogers, now there is a big update on his future

A former Aston Villa chief has now provided a very interesting update on the future of Tottenham Hotspur target Morgan Rogers.

It is no secret that Tottenham pushed to land Rogers in the summer before eventually securing Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig.

In fact, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Spurs were prepared to offer ‘crazy money’ for Rogers in the summer, but Villa made it clear that their star man was not for sale.

It has been reported over recent weeks that Tottenham could try again to land Rogers in January, and a Villa insider has now shed light on the midfielder’s contract situation.

Tottenham target Morgan Rogers may not be close to signing a new contract

Last month, it emerged that Villa had opened talks with Rogers over a new contract in order to ward off interest from Spurs and other Premier League clubs.

Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness, who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018, has now revealed that the contract talks with the former Middlesbrough man may not be as advanced as some reports suggest.

When asked if the Spurs target is expected to sign a new deal at Villa Park, Wyness told Football Insider: “I’m hearing conflicting sides of this. Some are saying that he’s in advanced talks. Some are saying they’re not quite as advanced as they’re being made out to be.

“Look, it would be a big boost if they could tie him down. But, we’ve talked about it many times, Villa have got one eye on PSR and the whole issue around that. So that’ll be part of it. But I think Villa will make every effort to keep him tied down because he’s got real value.

“If they were to get him under a new contract and then he had to be sold at some stage, the valuation obviously would go up. I think they’re going to be pulling every trick they can to try and get him to sign.

“But as I say, I’m hearing it’s not quite as advanced as the media would make us believe just now. It may be Villa trying to scare off any interest in him by saying that they’re in advanced talks. I think there’s certainly discussions going on, but it’s not yet a done deal.”

Could Spurs pull off a sensational Rogers deal?

Spurs are thought to be facing competition from Chelsea for Rogers, but getting the 23-year-old out of Villa Park mid-season is not expected to be easy.

However, we know that the North London club may have big money to spend in January after ENIC injected £100m equity into Tottenham a few weeks ago.

Additionally, several sources have claimed that Villa have PSR issues and may have to sell one of their key players in January.
