Tim Sherwood has revealed this week that Tottenham actually held talks with Aubameyang before he made his switch to Arsenal from Borussia Dortmund.
Sherwood was on a scouting mission for Spurs and recommended the striker a full seven years before he arrived in the red side of North London.
The forward was on loan from AC Milan to St Etienne at the time.
Talks were held with AC Milan over a tranfer for the rapid striker, but Aubameyang ended up joining for St Etienne permantly instead.
Since joining Arsenal, Aubameyang has been in electric form, scoring 20 goals in just 31 games for the Gunners.
Imagine the pace of Auba and the finishing of Harry Kane all in one team!
Either way, the man from Gabon will face up against the side he could have signed for in the North London derby today, and he will surely be looking to show Spurs what they missed.
“He’s got ridiculous pace and in front of goal he turns out the numbers. He was playing in a real competitive league for Dortmund.
“I went and watched him play for Gabon against Brazil when I was looking at Sandro, and we’d already signed him at Tottenham.
“[Aubameyang] was playing right wing and the pace he showed at the side, I thought ‘we’ve found one’.
“I looked it up and he was at AC Milan, so he was at a big club’, and he was on loan at St Etienne.
“I recommended to the club that we maybe try and nick him for a low price.
“He could easily have been at Tottenham. We tracked him for a long period of time and we had little discussions with him.
“But the manager at the time decided that he didn’t want him and he wasn’t for them, so he could easily have been in a white shirt on Sunday.
“He would be a major asset for Tottenham.
“But maybe if he’d come to Tottenham, Harry Kane wouldn’t have the pathway to come through. You just never know, it’s all in hindsight.
“Certainly if he was in Tottenham’s squad now he’d be a major asset.”
