Tottenham hire City Group’s Carlos Raphael Moersen for brand-new ‘modern’ role

Tottenham Hotspur have announced a new appointment to their hierarchy as the club’s leadership continues to be restructured.

There have been plenty of changes to the Tottenham leadership structure since the summer, with the headline act being the departure of Daniel Levy after 24 years as Spurs chairman.

They have continued to make changes since then, including the appointment of Dan Lewindon as Spurs’ new performance director.

Tottenham confirmed on their official website on Wednesday that Fabio Paratici will be vacating his role as the club’s sporting director to return to Italy and take over a new role at Fiorentina.

Tottenham announce Carlos Raphael Moersen as new Director of Football Operations

Just 24 hours after announcing Paratici’s departure, Tottenham have now confirmed the appointment of Carlos Raphael Moersen as the new Director of Football Operations.

It is a newly created role at Spurs, who are continuing to make tweaks to their footballing structure in the post-Levy era. Tottenham say the new role is ‘part of the Club’s approach to build a modern, high-performance football structure to drive long-term success’.

Moersen joins from the City Football Group, where he spent more than a decade across senior roles. He is the second official that Spurs have poached from the City Football Group in months, with Dan Lewindon also arriving from the same organisation.

Moersen has plenty of experience in player transactions, having most recently served as the director of football transactions at his former organisation.

However, journalist Tom Barclay has made it clear that Moersen is not a direct replacement for Paratici:

What will Carlos Raphael Moersen’s responsibilities be at Spurs?

Spurs say that this latest appointment, along with the few others before it, is a part of their attempts to ‘strengthen the foundations that support performance on the pitch’ and their increased focus on the academy.

Moersen will now lead Tottenham’s football administration, player care and training ground operations, and will also join the club’s executive leadership team.

Reacting to the appointment, sporting director Johan Lange said: “We are delighted to welcome Rafi to the Club in the newly created role of Director of Football Operations.

“He was the outstanding candidate from a highly competitive process and brings a wealth of experience in this critical area of our football operation. His appointment is an important step as we continue to strengthen our football structure and support long-term success.”
