Tottenham Hotspur officially announce first new signing of the Mourinho era

Tottenham Hotspur have finally officially announced the signing of Gedson Fernandes on loan from Benfica, the first signing of the Jose Mourinho era in North London.

Sky Sports reported earlier in the week that Fernandes passed his medical on the Monday ahead of an 18-month loan from Benfica to Tottenham.

Benfica also agreed terms with West Ham United, but Gedson preferred a move to their bitter rivals Tottenham instead.

Although the loan runs out in the summer of 2021, it is said that Spurs have an option to buy included in the deal, which is set at £56m. Spurs will also pay a loan fee for the midfield man.

Spurs wanted to sign an extra midfielder this month after the long-term injury to Moussa Sissoko, who is expected back in April.

21-year-old Fernandes has played 23 matches for the Benfica first-team, as well as 40 games for the B-team, and has two international caps for his native Portugal (Wikipedia).

Welcome Gedson!
