Over the last few weeks, there have been talks of Tottenham captain Heung-min Son being moved on. Now, former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson has urged the club to reconsider.

A tough season for Heung-min Son
It has been a difficult season for Spurs captain Heung-min Son, who has struggled to match his previous standards, with his goal contributions dropping significantly.
The South Korean winger featured in both of Tottenham’s recent cup exits, suffering a 4-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool and a 2-1 FA Cup loss to Aston Villa. Across those two games, Son registered five shots but failed to find the net.
With his form declining, reports suggest that Spurs, who once considered Son untouchable, are now open to selling him this summer.
Meanwhile, new signing Mathys Tel, who has already scored a goal in his first two games for the Lilywhites, is now seen as Son’s potential long-term successor.

‘Don’t let him go’ – Paul Robinson makes Heung-min Son plea
Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson has now made a plea to the N17 club, begging them not to let the South Korean winger go.
Robinson told Football Insider: “Sonny’s 32 now, and his form this season has been indifferent. The relationship that he’s got, the affiliation that he’s got with the club, I find it difficult to criticise the form at the moment.
“The team are not playing well, which is very difficult to play well when you’re playing in a team that’s struggling. He’s going to leave a huge hole.
“Everyone’s got a lifespan, everyone has their longevity, whenever that may be, he looks extremely fit, he looks extremely sharp. He may be lacking a little bit of confidence this season, I mean, you saw the game against Aston Villa last week in the FA Cup.
“He had a real good opportunity and he passed the ball at times when he shouldn’t have passed the ball, the opportunity to get the goal when it was, you know, when they were one down.
“I don’t see what a move away from Tottenham does good for anybody. For him, for the club, there’s no financial reward for the club.
“Further down the line, there’s got to be other players that are brought in. But at the moment, is he better than Timo Werner? Yeah, absolutely he is.
“You need to keep a player like Sonny around. Let him go on a free when his contract’s up. At the moment, you’re not going to get a lot of value from him.”

Heung-min Son – Spurs’ longest servant
There is no denying the fact that Son‘s numbers have dropped. However, Paul Robinson does make some pretty good points, when he says that his decline is not down to him alone – it is most likely because of the team’s poor form as well.
When comparing the wideman’s numbers to others within the team, he is not far off from them in terms of goal contribution.
Player | Goals | Assists | Appearances |
---|---|---|---|
James Maddison | 9 | 6 | 33 |
Dejan Kulusevski | 9 | 10 | 39 |
Brennan Johnson | 12 | 3 | 32 |
Dominic Solanke | 11 | 6 | 29 |
Heung-min Son | 10 | 8 | 33 |
Stats show that Heung-min Son is second in terms of goal contributions for Spurs this season and while Kulusevski is top with nineteen goal involvement, he has played six more games for the club this season.
The club’s captain is also currently the longest-serving player at the club, with a decade of experience under his belt already. If he is sold, the club misses on that experience, which is needed within this youthful Tottenham team.
