Tottenham’s Cristian Romero is expected to attract interest from one of the biggest clubs in Europe this summer, and according to a former Spurs scout, the Lilywhites could look to replace him with an England international.
While there is still a long way to go before the summer window, Tottenham Hotspur may already be planning for the difficult task of replacing of having to replace one of their best players.
Over the last few months, we have heard reports that Cristian Romero is hesitant to sign a new contract at Spurs as the Argentine is keen to play Champions League football.
One of the North London club’s former employers has suggested that Postecoglou may turn to a proven Premier League centre-back to replace their vice-captain.

Tottenham backed to replace Cristian Romero with Marc Guehi
It was widely reported that Tottenham had a £70m offer turned down for Marc Guehi during the January window, with the Lilywhites securing Kevin Danso from Lens instead.
Reports over recent weeks have claimed that Spurs will try again to sign Guehi when the transfer window reopens in the summer.
Tottenham’s former scout, Mick Brown, believes that the Palace man might be the player that the Lilywhites turn, particularly as Real Madrid prepare to turn their gaze towards Romero.
Brown told Football Insider about Spurs’ summer plans: “Tottenham want to sign a top-class centre-back when the window opens. They don’t need a ‘might-be’ player, they need a solid, definitive centre-half. If they can bring a player like that in, it will allow them to pair him with Van de Ven and create a really strong partnership at the back.
“I’ve heard Romero has been mentioned in connection with a move to Real Madrid as well, so that’s going to add to their need to sign a new option. So their scouts will be looking to see what options will be available to them.
“They missed out on signing Marc Guehi in January, he would have been the perfect option. Tottenham haven’t been good enough defensively this season, it’s an area they have to address. If they’re going to stick with Postecoglou, they have to back him to strengthen the team and make sure he can get the players he wants.”
Why Spurs desperately need to win the Europa League
Given the way Tottenham’s season has gone and the disillusionment among the fans, the club are in desperate need of the shot in the arm that would come from lifting the Europa League.
Not only would lifting the trophy in Bilbao turn around the mood in N17, but the Champions League qualification that comes with it will prove crucial for the club to retain players like Romero and attract top-class talent in the summer.
However, being knocked out in the quarterfinal and semifinal will potentially lead to Postecoglou being sacked and force the club to go back to the drawing board and start from square one again.
